Green Fatigue

Maybe, you follow National Geographic on Instagram. Maybe, you have watched a David Attenborough narrated documentary on Netflix. Heck, maybe you read this blog!

The end result is usually: "The environment is getting worse and I can't do anything about it."

There is so much information out there about what’s best for our planet. To stay on top of all of the best new hemp products, or what cardboard boxes we can reuse, or what things I have to unplug when I stop using them - it's a full time gig.

A lot of times the sheer amount of information is overwhelming. It creates this effect called, "green fatigue".

Basically, it's the idea that there are so many things we should be doing, and it's not clear which are most important, so it's easier to just give up trying.

I get it. Many of us suffer from it. You learn that almonds take 75 times more water than oat milk, so you switch to oat milk. But oat milk comes in a plastic carton, and most of us don't live around oat milk farms, so now that carton is bad. Then you have to go to a work party and you got assigned plates, cups, and utensils to bring. You go to 2 different stores and neither has a biodegradable option so by the time you get to Target you are just buying whatever they have because your work party is not worth spending this much time on.

This is a normal feeling. All I am here to tell you in this post is that we all feel that way.

The best we can do is just try.

I'm going to list some tips for if you feel like you don't know what's best below, but the best one is just quite simple: Anything is better than nothing.

  • Research on science based tips (https://www.epa.gov/environmental-topics/greener-living)

  • Remember why: whatever your "green" light is, remember what flipped it on in the first place.

  • Celebrate your small, already victories!

  • Ask someone their opinions. Everybody does something green.

  • Try the thing you saw on Insta, maybe it will work!

There is no one-sized-fits-all solution to the problem. There is A TON of information out there, and only more and more of it to come. We feel the same way and we will try and sort this all out together. You don't have to do everything, but it helps if we all do something.
